Masked Hero- Wu Lien-teh. A Malaysian Doctor Who Helped Develop Face Masks.

Dr. Shan Woo Liu, an attending physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, approached me to create a dummy picture book about her grandfather, Dr Wu Lien-teh, the original creator of N95 mask. It was an amazing experience because the story took me on a journey starting in 1897 in Penang, Emmanuel College in Cambridge on a Queen's Scholarship as he was the first Cambridge student of Chinese descent to 1910, Harbin, China to fight the Manchurian Plaque and creation of N95 mask. The amount of research and detailed understanding of the time and situation on all the different continents was challenging yet rewarding for me. I wanted to do this project because I felt strongly the importance of having “mirrors and windows” in books – which means to let readers see into the lives of other people, and to be able to see themselves reflected in stories as well – which are most definitely present in my own.
